About us
(Friends of Meteorology,FOM) was established by a group of meteorology enthusiates in April, 2000, which is a government registered non profit-making organization.
In order to raise people's attentions to meteorology. Our aim is Promoting Meteorology. We organise some general meteorology functions and events, including talks, lectures and visiting to organizations related to meteorology. So as to increase cares and interests to meteorology among our members. Furthermore, FOM wished to provide an opportunity for meteorology lovers to gather and interchanging ideas through such functions and events. Apart from that, our members would then raise their awareness to adverse weathers and natural disaster. Sometimes, we do voluntary jobs to serve the community. Finally we hope they subject "Meteorology" will be more common in Hong Kong and lastly being an interest among most of the people.
Introduction
Weather relates to our daily life closely, but in Hong Kong it is not a common interest and is not well-known by people. Although there were friends who love this topic, they did not have many chances to participate events about knowing meteorology. By the establishment of Friends Of Observatory under Hong Kong Observatory in 1996, people in public may join the events it holds to know more about what meteorology is. In order to provide one more chance for public to get closer to meteorology, a group of meteorology enthusiasts founded Friends Of Meteorology which is a government registered non profit-making organization/ The aim of FOM is promoting meteorology to the public through holding different formats of functions like lectures, tea gathering, picnic, BBQ....and giving information to our members. Such events also provide opportunities to members to know each other and interchanging ideas and finally meteorology as an interest among most of the people.
Our interests
Our interests are observing and monitoring weather phenomenon occurring in Hong Kong and around the globe, especially some weathers and phenomenon which do not bring much attentions to people. For instance, when a tropical cyclone in approaching Hong Kong, we will keep monitoring latest weather data and information from different meteorology organizations to catch up its movements days to nights. To see whether it will bring affections to Hong Kong directly. Some of our committees may even put themselves in risks to feel the power of wind in streets, harbours and highlands. Instead of wind-chasing, some weather phenomenon for example coldness, rainstorms and fog are all we like to spot. However, many friends can not distinguish the differences between Astronomy and Meteorology quite often, and usually see our interests as a kind of astronomy and spotting stars. Actually our interests are not in astronomy. Astronomy is a study of universe which is outside the earth's atmosphere. From meteor falls occurring at very high levels of outer atmosphere to the galaxy, stars, planets evolutions and may even to the matters and structure of the universe are areas in astronomy. But meteorology mainly focuses the studies on weather phenomenon for example clouds, rains, snows and typhoons. Although the scientific studies of astronomy and meteorology are in big different, many friends and even press media do mix them up.
Our committees spend a lot of time on their interests and many of them are rushing with daily life(either the complicated works in company or heavy workload at colleges), too. On top of that, everyone of us are all happy to donate our time and spirits to work for the generalization of meteorology locally.
Just because we are keen on, and love our interests.
If you have any enquiries or suggestions to FOM, you are welcome to talk to us via email or letter. If you wish to make contact with an individual committee, you may also contact them via email. Your voice is always welcome.
